MOUNT KISCO – Aspiring burglars may want to take some advice from Bertin Lazaro: Don’t break into a business you visit on a daily basis.

Mount Kisco police said Lazaro, 30, of 106 Maple Ave., Mount Kisco, did just that Nov. 2 when he broke into a deli at 15 E. Main St. early in the morning, going through a window and stealing two registers that contained cash.

When store employees reviewed video taken from surveillance cameras inside the store, they thought the burglar looked familiar, police said.

“He kept slipping his hoodie (hooded sweatshirt) on and off but the employees recognized him,” Lt. Patrick O’Reilly said Monday.

Lazaro was shopping in the store Friday when a worker noticed him and called Mount Kisco Detective Joseph Donza, who responded with other officers and took Lazaro into custody.

He eventually admitted to his crime and was charged with third-degree burglary, a felony, police said. He was arraigned in Village Court, where a justice set bail at $750.

Lazaro was unable to post bail and remained Monday at the Westchester County jail, where a federal immigration detainer warrant was placed on him because he is suspected of being in the country illegally, Westchester County correction records show. He’s due back in Village Court on Thursday.

O’Reilly said police are still searching for the registers.
