SOUTHEAST – An 86-year-old Putnam Lake woman died Monday when she was run over by a truck backing up in the Putnam County Savings Bank parking lot, the county sheriff said.

Barbara Fetzer died at 10:05 a.m. at the Putnam Hospital Center, about 30 minutes after being hit by a 2008 silver Ford Ranger 4-by-4 pickup driven by Thomas Hunt, 66, of Southeast, Sheriff Donald Smith said.

Smith said no charges have been filed as police continue to investigate the death.

Fetzer was walking across the parking lot when Hunt backed his truck out of a parking space, knocking her to ground and then running over her, Smith said. The bank is located on Route 6 intersection with Drewville Road.

"No one intended for this to happen," Smith said. "This is a terrible shock for the family."

She was treated at the scene by paramedics with Transcare Medics and medics with the Brewster Fire Department and Ambulance Corps.

The Sheriff's Department accident reconstruction team is investigating Fetzer's death, along with the department's forensic unit, Smith said. The state police assisted at the scene.
