A black bear cub has been spotted Sunday morning along River Road in Grand View, becoming the latest sighting in Rockland.

The bear was seen climbing the hill toward Upper Grand View to the west, South Nyack-Grand View police said. Police described the cub as small with a "tagged ear." A bear, or possibly bears, were also seen roaming areas of Blauvelt, Pearl River and the Orangetown soccer fields on Orangeburg Road.

Police issued a cautionary warning. They urge residents in the area to keep their children and pets inside, as well as their garbage cans and any food spills and cookout leftovers. They say it's also time to put bird feeders away to avoid bears hunting for food.

State wildlife experts estimate about 6,000 to 8,000 black bears live in New York.

Black bears have made numerous appearances in the Lower Hudson Valley recently, including one in Yonkers on Tuesday. That bear was captured and relocated on state land by the state Department of Environmental Conservation, which provides tips on how to avoid bear encounters.

That same day there were bear sightings in Suffern and Ramapo, and on Thursday, a bear cub was hit and killed by a car in Montebello.
