GREENBURGH – An Elmsford man has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a shooting Tuesday night in the area of Payne Street and Sears Avenue, police said.

Tajuan Herring, 37, of Saw Mill River Road, was arrested Wednesday in the yard of a relative's home at 166 Sears Ave. where detectives found three loaded guns, including a sawed-off shotgun, under a children's swing set, police said. Herring also had another handgun on him and some crack cocaine, police said.

Detectives questioned Herring during a canvass of the area in following up on the report of a shooting a night earlier.

Shell casings were found on the Payne Street sidewalk between Winthrop and Sears avenue shortly after the 10:35 p.m. reported shooting, although no one appeared to have been shot and there were no reported other injuries and weapons recovered that night.

Police said they were not ready to identify the target of the shooting and were still investigating the motive.

Herring was charged with second-degree attempted murder, four counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, all felonies. He also was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor.

Herring was to be arraigned in Town Court on Thursday afternoon.
