Plant sales abound this weekend

  • Gifts and baked goods, too
  • Many of the plants are grown in local gardens

If you haven't gotten a gift for Mom yet, perhaps there is a beautiful hanging basket with her name on it at one of the many local plant sales this weekend.

Mother's Day weekend is the traditional kickoff of the spring gardening season because mid-May is generally the end of any danger of a late frost killing annuals like geraniums, daisies and basil. So take advantage of these many sales to stock up on plants for your home garden.

Unlike at the big box stores, many of the plants at these sales are local, grown in the gardens of local club members. You'll also find baked goods, raffles, white elephant tables and gift items.

Many of these gardening groups count on the money they raise from these plant sales to fund the many beautification projects they take on.
