News in brief

SAVANNAH, Ga. – A horse carriage operator was hurt and five passengers from Sleepy Hollow escaped serious injury when the horse pulling their carriage got startled and crashed into five vehicles in downtown Savannah.

Savannah Chatham Metropolitan police say the carriage, operated by Historic Savannah Carriage, was carrying two women, ages 42 and 67, and three children, ages 12, 10 and 7, from Sleepy Hollow on Monday morning when the horse pulling the coach began running. The 67-year-old woman was treated at a nearby urgent care center and released.

The incident spanned six city blocks and nearby restaurant employees eventually calmed the horse down with carrots, department spokesman Julian Miller said.

The 37-year-old carriage operator, Ashley Bignault, was ejected from the coach and was taken to Memorial University Medical Center. The extent of her injuries wasn't immediately clear. Police say the horse wasn't injured.

The incident is under investigation.
