CHAPPAQUA – New Castle police are investigating an apparent act of vandalism in which a banner promoting Hillary Rodham Clinton's appearance at the Chappaqua Library this month was defaced.

Clinton, a local resident and potential presidential candidate, is scheduled to sign copies of her new memoir, "Hard Choices," on June 29.

Police said a banner promoting her appearance in front of the library at 195 S. Greeley Ave. was defaced this weekend before being removed. The message reportedly included a reference to the 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya.

Police did not give many details about the investigation. Library Director Pamela Thornton declined to comment Sunday.

(Update: Police provided more details on Monday, including that the word "Benghazi" was written in red letters on the banner)

In "Hard Choices," Clinton details her years as secretary of state, including a discussion of the attack that killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans.

The signing will begin at 3 p.m., but the library will distribute a limited number of wristbands on a first-come-first-served basis starting at 1 p.m.
