TARRYTOWN — A 49-year-old man died Sunday night only a few hours after he was pulled unconscious from the Hudson River.

UPDATE:Bronx man drowned in river after jumping off sailboat

Westchester County's Marine Unit responded around 4:30 p.m. to a report of a boater "who either jumped voluntary or may have fallen off," according to Lt. James Luciano.

Police pulled him out of the water about a mile south of the Tappan Zee Bridge midspan. They performed CPR and he was taken from the Tarrytown Marina to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators said it's not clear what caused the victim, one of three on the boat, to go overboard.

They were still interviewing two other people aboard the vessel, a 32-foot sailboat. Police said the victim was not wearing a life vest.

"We think at this time it was an accidental drowning," Luciano said. "But we're still investigating."

The police had not released the victim's name as of Sunday night because they were still trying to notify his family.

Labor Day is typically one of the three busiest weekends of the year on the river for recreational boating.

River conditions on Sunday were described as calm and glassy — not factors in the drowning, police said.
