PUTNAM VALLEY – A car accident on the Taconic State Parkway on Monday evening left one man dead and snarled traffic in both directions for hours, according to police and breaking news reports.

State police said the victim was airlifted by helicopter to Westchester Medical Center after the 6:20 p.m. crash, but that he was later pronounced dead. Police did not identify the man pending completion of an investigation and until his family could be notified.

Police said the vehicle was traveling north on the parkway south of Peekskill Hollow Road when the accident occurred. It was not known if more than one vehicle was involved, but two tow trucks were dispatched to the scene.

Investigators were still on the scene late Monday and few other details were available.

Traffic on the busy parkway was brought to a near standstill in the aftermath of the crash. Southbound Taconic traffic was diverted at Peekskill Hollow Road. Northbound traffic was forced to exit on Bryant Pond Road. The parkway reopened about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.
