Yonkers landslide: p.m. delays seen; 4 stations back

YONKERS – Train service has been restored to four Metro-North Hudson Line stations where a mudslide covered tracks in Yonkers.

With the local track covered with mud, workers have set up bridge plates to allow customers to get off and on the trains from the express tracks at at Riverdale, Ludlow, Glenwood and Greystone, railroad spokeswoman Marjorie Anders said.

"The track is still out of service, the mud is still on the track," she said.

The trains are running with 10- to 15-minute delays, the railroad said shortly before noon.

"We're going to have a normal p.m. rush hour with some delays on the Hudson Line," she said.

Hudson Line riders say delays of up to 30 Thursday morning after a retention wall partially collapsed Wednesday evening, causing a 40-foot-wide landslide that left a section of Metro-North track buried in concrete, rock and soil.

Officials said no one was injured in the landslide, which was first reported by a staffers on a passing train about 6:30 p.m. The day's heavy rains are believed to have been a major factor in causing the incident.

A retention wall collapsed Wednesday, sending concrete, rock and soil down over a Metro-North Hudson Line track.

Anders said the landslide forced two tracks out of service — one a northbound local track affected by the debris and the other a track that was used to move the equipment necessary to clear it to the scene. During the remainder of the evening rush, trains used two adjacent tracks to pass, she said, noting that some delays were reported.

During Thursday morning's rush, two tracks remained out of service and speed was reduced to 30 mph on a third passing the slide.

Northbound trains on the Hudson Line were unable to stop at the four stations. Riders took buses to the stations from the Yonkers station and buses to travel from the stations.

The building nearest to the damage, an apartment complex at 679 Warburton Ave. in the Glenwood section, was not immediately evacuated Wednesday night, though police said a building inspector was on the scene and still trying to determine whether such a measure was necessary.
