MONTGOMERY, N.Y. – A 63-year-old man's alleged suicide Monday prompted a large-scale response involving numerous law enforcement agencies that lasted into the early evening.

Officers responded to the home of Jeremy Green, who had reportedly been growing increasingly despondent and irrational throughout the day, Arnold W. Amthor, chief of the Montgomery Town Police Department, said in a statement.

Police spotted Green inside the house, but the 63-year-old refused to answer the door. After he walked out of an officer's line of sight, a gunshot was heard from inside the home, prompting a response from additional town police as well as officers from the Orange County Sheriff's Office, the Maybrook and Montgomery village police departments, and New York State Police, Amthor said.

The area was cordoned off and neighbors were asked to remain inside their homes, Amthor said. Over the course of the next several hours, numerous failed attempts to contact Green were made before members of the Orange County Sheriff's Special Operations Group stormed the home about 4 p.m., finding Green dead inside a bedroom. Amthor said Green appears to have died after shooting himself with a shotgun.

At 8 p.m., officers were said to still be on the scene awaiting the Orange County Medical Examiner. The death remained under investigation.
