3 cozy coffee shops to try in Peekskill

Peekskill is one caffeinated town.

There are three coffee shops — gems, each one — within walking distance of one another, and each has a distinct vibe.

Whether you’re in the mood for iced or hot drinks, cozy or modern coffee shops, sweet treats with your coffee or a full, sit-down meal, Peekskill’s downtown has got you covered.

Peekskill Coffee House

A latte at the Peekskill Coffee House

On the quiet corner of South Division and Brown Street, the always-bustling Peekskill Coffee House feels like home, with a comforting mix of eclectic, mismatched furniture and a sun-filled space.

PCH often offers fun specials, like a cinnamon toast latte for those feeling adventurous, but sticking with classics like the plain latte will not disappoint — it's a smooth brew with perfectly fluffy foam.

The large windows and abundance of natural light make it a perfect Sunday morning hangout spot. Try a savory or sweet crepe (the batter is made in-house), or one of many other enticing treats, like cookies, muffins, babka, and Napoleons. Go: 101 S Division St., Peekskill, 914-739-1287, www.peekskillcoffee.com.

Big Bang Coffee Roasters (NOW CLOSED)

Cold brew and vegan brownie at Big Bang Coffee Roasters

[Update: This location of Big Bang has closed, but the coffee shop is re-opening at the Hat Factory in Peekskill as soon as they get set up! Stay tuned for more specifics.]

If you're looking for an industrial, hipster feel, head to Big Bang. Low light, exposed brick, open floor space, eclectic art — including large fish that hang from the ceiling — and iron chandeliers make for a relaxed and trendy environment.

A playlist with Red Hot Chili Peppers and Counting Crows tops off the vibe, as does the small stage in the middle of the floor. On Thursday nights at least once a month, Big Bang is home to open mic nights (and other music events) hosted by the performing arts guild on the third floor of the building.

We recommend the cold brew, locally roasted at the Hat Factory, and baristas say it's good enough for people to fight over when it runs out. It lived up to the hype for us: with a smooth flavor and no bitterness, it's easy to imagine why people would take its absence to heart.

For dessert, the rich, chocolatey, vegan brownie is an excellent choice. (You'd never know it was vegan.) How could you ignore something that combines chocolate chip cookie and brownie into one? Go: 1008 Main St., Peekskill, 914-402-1280, www.bigbangcoffeeroasters.com.

The Bean Runner

An iced coffee at the Bean Runner

The Bean Runner is a no-frills Peekskill stalwart that feels more like a restaurant than a coffee shop, because it sort of is. With ample seating, a patio, a full menu, a kids’ room, live entertainment and a mini art gallery, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for at any time of day. And you won't be alone, as the Bean Runner is a gathering place in Peekskill.

The coffee and dessert selection is short and simple. You won’t find vegan brownies or cinnamon toast lattes here, but you will find live jazz and blues music (and sometimes comedy) on Friday nights that locals rave over.

While there isn't a cold brew option, the iced coffee is tasty and just strong enough without being bitter. Go:  201 S Division St., Peekskill, 914-737-1701, www.beanrunnercafe.com.
