Damage after porch collapse on Silver Lane in Chestnut Ridge

CHESTNUT RIDGE - An 84-year old man was seriously injured and three others hurt when a deck collapsed onto a concrete patio Monday at a home on Silver Lane, police and fire officials said.

Authorities responded about 11:35 a.m. and found that the rear deck, which was attached to the second story of a high ranch style house, had detached from the home while the four were on it, Ramapo police said.

The man, who owns the home, had leg and head injuries, his 54-year-old son had ankle and facial injuries and a woman injured her leg and back, a police statement said. A home health aide also had a leg and shoulder injury.

All were taken to local hospitals. It appears the deck was attached to a beam that rotted, police said.

"They were just having a get together for the Fourth of July holiday and, unfortunately, a tragic accident happened," said South Spring Valley Fire Chief Chris VanSchaick.
