A Mahopac Falls man was found dead in his home after firefighters worked to knock down a kitchen fire early Sunday morning, police said.

Carmel police said Richard J. Delaney, 39, was pronounced dead at his Foxey Lane home at 4:19 a.m. after attempts were made to revive him by a Putnam County paramedic and Mahopac Falls ambulance members.

The official cause of death is yet to be determined, but reports suggest that Delaney may have become trapped in his house and succumbed to smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by a county fire investigation team and Carmel detectives, police said. It appears to have started in the kitchen.

Police and firefighters arrived at the ranch-style home after a report just before 4 a.m. that said someone might still possibly be in the home. Delaney was found in a rear bedroom and removed from the structure while the fire was extinguished.
