Father, son rescued at Playland Lake

RYE - A father and son from the Bronx were recovering at Greenwich (Connecticut) Hospital after they jumped into Playland Lake from a pontoon boat Sunday and had to be rescued after they got into distress, Westchester County police said.

The incident began at 4:49 p.m. when  a 17-year-old jumped from the pontoon boat to retrieve a hat belonging to his mom that had blown into the lake.  When the boy appeared to be in distress, his father, age 36, jumped in to help him. According to witnesses, both males went under the water briefly but were able to get back to the surface.

The crew on the pontoon boat tossed life vests to the pair to help them stay afloat, and passengers and crew hauled them back aboard the boat, said Kieran O'Leary, a police spokesman.

They were taken back to shore immediately and transported by ambulance to Greenwich Hospital. The teen was expected to be released tonight; his father was to be kept overnight for observation.

The pontoon boat had 20 people on it. It is run by a private concessionaire who provides a ride around the lake on the boat to park patrons.
