A moose was struck by a car in Cortlandt on Saturday afternoon.

CORTLANDT - A moose that was seriously injured after it was struck by a car in Cortlandt on Saturday afternoon was euthanized by state troopers.

Troopers were on patrol when they discovered the moose just off Route 9 near Welcher Avenue around noon, said Trooper Melissa McMorris, a state police spokeswoman. They were unable to locate the driver of the vehicle that struck the animal, she said.

McMorris said it was not known if the moose was the same one spotted earlier this summer in Bedford, Ossining and Cortlandt.

WILDLIFE: Bobcats, coyotes and bears live among us!

Wildlife experts told The Journal News/lohud they estimate there are between 500 and 800 "very mobile moose" in New York, but the animals tends to stay up near the Adirondacks.
