The ongoing investigation into a Bronx explosion that killed FDNY Battalion Chief Michael Fahy of Yonkers earlier this week yielded a second arrest Wednesday evening.

NYPD officials announced they had apprehended 32-year-old New York City man, Garivaldi Castillo, and charged him with criminal possession of marijuana, a felony. Police said that he had a connection to the explosion, but would not say what it was.

The announcement came a day after the first suspect in the investigation, 34-year-old Julio Salcedo Contrer, was arrested in Cliffside Park, New Jersey.

The NYPD said Thursday morning that Contrer continues to be held in the Bergen County jail as a fugitive from justice. He's being held without bail pending extradition to New York, jail spokesman Anthony Cureton said Wednesday. Contrer apparently was a tenant in the house that exploded, in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx.

FUNERAL SET: FDNY Chief Michael Fahy mourned at firehouse

It was not immediately clear when he would face court proceedings in Bergen County or be returned to New York.

NYPD officials wouldn't give details of the charges against Castillo. They also would not comment on whether police were looking for more suspects.

New York City's mayor had said earlier Wednesday that investigators want to speak to anyone with a connection to the property.

Speaking on WNYC before the second arrest, Mayor Bill de Blasio said there was a "strong indication (the Bronx home) was a marijuana grow house ... with all the different equipment there that could have been the cause" of the blast.

"We're obviously looking for everyone in addition to the one individual who has been apprehended," he said. "We're looking for everyone else who may have either involved or have knowledge of this site because we actually have to get to the bottom of what happened here. And we have to hold everyone involved responsible."

The forensic investigation continued at the Bronx blast site, as investigators sifted through the remains, ATF spokesman Matthew Meyerson said. He added that the ATF investigators from the agency's arson and explosion task force were offering technical assistance to the NYPD and FDNY, as well as ATF investigators from the agency's fire research laboratory.

"It's way too early to decide a cause," Meyerson said. "They are starting the demolition work."

Fahy was a married father of three young children who was raised in North Rockland and lived in the Crestwood section of Yonkers, where his funeral is expected to be held on Saturday.

The battalion chief was killed directing operations at the scene when he was struck by falling debris from the explosion, including part of the building's roof, officials said.

De Blasio on Wednesday said the blast had a "tragic randomness," killing Fahy but sparing others just a few feet away from him, as well as Consolidated Edison workers in the home's basement.

"It's just a horrible, horrible random reality," he said. "And we lost a very, very good man."
