Yonkers' newest park on the exposed Saw Mill River downtown will win a landscaping award.

Mayor Mike Spano announced Wednesday that the New Jersey chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects will recognize the Saw Mill River Daylighting at Mill Street Courtyard with a 2017 Design Award at the chapter’s annual conference on March 13.

Designed by New Jersey-based design firm Edgewater Design LLC, the Mill Street Courtyard officially opened in summer 2016 as part of the city’s multi-phased daylighting of the Saw Mill River in downtown Yonkers.

"The daylighting of the Saw Mill River at Mill Street is a beautifully designed open urban civic space that provides residents and visitors greater access to our waterfront district and revitalizing city," said Spano. “Edgewater Design was a great partner throughout the process and we are honored that our Mill Street project has been selected for this award.”

DAYLIGHT: Yonkers unveils new park at uncovered Saw Mill River

The Mill Street Courtyard was transformed from a commercial block within the center of downtown Yonkers into a European style piazza which includes a pedestrian and vehicular bridge, a new pedestrian gateway that provides access from the Saw Mill River daylighting at Van Der Donck Park. The park is in a courtyard adjacent to North Broadway just north of Getty Square.

Also featured in the courtyard is a mill stone that was uncovered during construction and is believed to date back 150 years when the old Yonkers Flouring Mill was once housed there.

The first phase of the Saw Mill River Daylighting, known as Van der Donck Park, also earned national, statewide and regional recognition, including the “National Recognition Award” by the American Council of Engineering Companies, “Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award” by the New York State Society of Professional Engineers, “Project of the Year” by the Westchester/Putnam Chapter of the New York State Society of Professional Engineers, “Project of the Year” by the Construction Management Association of America, “William White Award” by the American Planning Association and the “New York Honor Award” by the American Society of Landscape Architecture.
